About «Alma Escondida»
Alma Escondida (Hidden Soul) is the debut project of saxophonist and artist Sofia Carrasco, released on April 4, 2025.
This album combines music and visual art, with each piece of artwork intentionally created to connect with the music. The project explores the idea of the «soul» as a hidden force within us—something Sofia believes can be accessed through artistic expression.
The title Alma Escondida represents her search for this hidden soul through the creative process—a journey toward self-understanding and a deeper connection with others.
The pieces Danza I and Danza II are paired with four charcoal drawings on canvas, representing dance’s connection to spiritual trance. ¿Dónde Está Mi Alma Escondida? (Where Is My Hidden Soul?) and Vida Pasajera (Temporary Life) are accompanied by four drawings inspired by the Andean festival Tunantada, reflecting her fascination with the use of masks, ritual, alcohol, nature, and the feelings of nostalgia and melancholy it evokes.
You can find these paintings and more information about her creative process on Sofia’s website: www.sofia-carrasco.com

Sofia Carrasco’s «Alma Escondida» a soundtrack of evolving jazz/introspection: Our MusicBailar, or dancing, along with wrestling with melancholy feel intertwined on the album, as part of the album’s intrinsic theme of what I call “soul work.” Carrasco paints a portrait of this on two levels — musically and visually, with striking illustrations like the melancholic cover art, and other pieces intertwined with the design of the CD version of the album; (…). This art captures melancholy and movement, and perhaps movement through melancholy.
